Bill criminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial passes the French Senate

The French Senate passed the bill crminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial by a vote of 127 to 86.
Earlier, the French Senate voted to overturn last week’s decision by the Senate’s Laws Commission, which rejected the resolution, calling it unconstitutional.
The French lower house last month approved the bill which threatens with jail anyone who denies that the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turk forces amounted to genocide, drawing a first wave of Turkish ire.
Ankara froze political and military ties with France and promised further measures if the measure is passed by the Senate.
The measure now needs to be signed by President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose party proposed it, to become a law.
The new legislature will punish anyone who denies the Armenian Genocide with a year in jail and a fine of 45,000 euros.
